ABU DHABI, Wed: The sea port and airport of Abu Dhabi were the best models for the development of the new Kuching sea port and airport, Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg said here, today.
The Abu Dhabi sea port built out into the sea on reclaimed land grew rapidly from a small beginning to one that was the biggest in the Middle East, he pointed out.
He said the port’s operation was seamless with various innovations leading to transformation of Abu Dhabi’s maritime infrastructure positioning the Emirate as a premier logistics, transport and trade hub.
The Premier was speaking to the press after his working tour of the Abu Dhabi ultramodern airport, and earlier, in the morning a similar tour of the Abu Dhabi sea port.
The Premier arrived here from Toulouse, France yesterday evening after a working visit to the UK and France.
He told reporters that the Abu Dhabi port would be collaborating with the Bintulu Port to expand the Samalaju Industrial Port and upgrade its operation.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pave the way for collaboration was signed between the two ports this morning.
He said the development of the Kuching port would involve participation of the public and private sector like the approach taken by the Abu Dhabi port.
As for the Kuching airport, he envisaged that the terminal building would be a unique, modern and green architecture while the operation seamless from check-in to customs and to immigration clearance to boarding.
“Who knows in the future our airport might have better technology,” he opined.
For a start, the Kuching airport would be built to cater to 15 million passengers compared to Abu Dhabi’s 45 million.
Among those in the Premier’s delegation were Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, the Minister for Transport, State Secretary, Datuk Amar Haji Mohammad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, who is also chairman of Bintulu Port, Dato Sri Wanlizozman bin Wan Omar, State Attorney-General, Dato Sri Saferi Ali and State Assemblyman, Azizul Adenan, Chairman of Kuching Port.
