KUCHING, 23 Oct – Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, commended the Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS) for its significant achievements over the past decade in shaping Sarawak’s workforce to meet the demands of the digital economy and emerging industries like aerospace.
Speaking at the CENTEXS 10th Anniversary Dinner held at the Waterfront Hotel, Premier Abang Johari acknowledged the centre’s initial focus on training youths in industries such as welding and construction.
However, he noted that CENTEXS has since evolved, especially after the launch of Sarawak’s digital economy in 2017, aligning itself with new technological needs. “CENTEXS has successfully transformed education and our local talent, equipping them to fill the needs of today’s growing economy,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of CENTEXS’ role in Sarawak’s transition towards digitalization. By partnering with global leaders such as Huawei, the institution has prepared Sarawak’s workforce for the challenges posed by advanced technologies. This collaboration has positioned CENTEXS at the forefront of digital and technological training in the state.
Premier Abang Johari also highlighted the crucial role CENTEXS will play in addressing environmental concerns, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy initiatives. He added that the centre is essential in training youth for the aerospace industry, which includes satellite technology, metallurgy, and high-tech composites used in aircraft and avionics.
“We must equip our youth not only with knowledge of satellites but the entire aerospace industry. Sarawak has the potential to one day produce parts for airplanes and avionics,” he remarked, further stressing the importance of developing expertise in fields such as rocket science and composite materials.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari urged for CENTEXS to focus on training postgraduate students in advanced areas such as aerospace, renewable energy, and finance, with a focus on the application of technology. He emphasized that CENTEXS is no longer just a youth training centre but an institution pivotal in shaping Sarawak’s technological future.
The Premier also pointed out the need for more skilled chip designers, citing with SMD, which has already produced nearly 100 chip designers. These specialists are crucial for industries like aerospace, petrochemicals, and shipping, especially as technological advancements demand smaller, more intricate chip designs.
In closing, Abang Johari expressed optimism that CENTEXS, with its strategic vision, would continue to nurture the next generation of skilled professionals, placing Sarawak in a strong position to tap into the global market, particularly in Asia. “We are fortunate to be located within a five-hour flight range of half the world’s population. This is our market, and with trained talent, we can seize the opportunities it offers,” he concluded.
Also attending the event were Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Chairman of CENTEXS Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Bin Abdul Ghani, and CENTEXS Chief Executive Officer, Dato Haji Syeed Mohd Hussien Bin Wan Abd Rahman, along with ministers, deputy ministers, and other distinguished guests.
