Sarawak Sets Bold Sustainability Vision, Launches Blueprint 2030 And Surpasses Renewable Energy Goals

KUCHING, 29 May - Sarawak has reaffirmed its position as a frontrunner in climate action and sustainable development, unveiling a comprehensive Sustainability Blueprint 2030, exceeding renewable energy targets, and calling for stronger regional collaboration under ASEAN’s green economy agenda.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg made the announcements at the Asia Carbon Conference 2025, describing the moment as a major turning point in Sarawak’s green transformation.

“I am delighted to stand before such a distinguished gathering of leaders, experts, and changemakers - united by a shared commitment to shaping the future of climate action and sustainable development,” said the Premier.

He emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant projection, but a tangible reality that impacts every part of the world, including Sarawak. The Premier said the global transition is being shaped by three major forces: the rise of proactive alliances among developing nations such as ASEAN, the shift to renewable energy, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

“These convergent forces are not only reshaping markets or policies, but they are also redefining the boundaries of what is possible. It is precisely this understanding that drives Sarawak’s proactive and pioneering efforts in climate action and commitment to a sustainable future” he said.

The Premier announced that Sarawak has surpassed its 2030 target of 60% renewables for installed power capacity ahead of schedule, with hydropower now contributing 70% of the state’s total energy mix. This has resulted in a 72% reduction in grid carbon emissions between 2010 and 2023.

“We have acted, not just spoken, on sustainability,” he said. “This achievement represents cleaner air, a healthier environment, and a stronger foundation for our future.”

Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak’s aggressive moves to develop the hydrogen economy, launch a 50 MW floating solar project, implement mini-hydro initiatives for rural electrification, and promote electric vehicle adoption. Sarawak is deepening its partnerships with Japan, South Korea, and China to scale up green hydrogen production, cut energy costs, and build a leadership position in the Asia-Pacific hydrogen market.

“This is about creating new industries, new jobs, and a new economic paradigm for Sarawak,” the Premier said.

Another key milestone announced was the official launch of the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030, the first of its kind by any Malaysian state.

“With immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility, I am incredibly honoured to officially launch the first-ever Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030—a pioneering effort by any state in Malaysia,” said the Premier.

Crafted by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, the blueprint lays out 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 actionable plans. It outlines Sarawak’s commitment to accelerating renewable energy transition, advancing carbon capture and storage, enhancing forest and land conservation, promoting green industries and investments, building sustainable cities through circular economy practices, and developing a future-ready workforce through education, skills, and research.

Abang Johari expressed confidence that the blueprint will integrate green principles into the very fabric of Sarawak’s economy and society. He said the state stands ready to support Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” by contributing its expertise and leadership in the green economy.

“Sarawak’s renewable energy capacity, carbon management frameworks, and leadership in CCUS position us as a crucial partner in demonstrating how ASEAN can achieve sustainable growth and address climate change collaboratively,” he said.

He extended an open invitation to investors, innovators, and like-minded nations to join Sarawak in its sustainability journey.

“Sarawak is open for business, and more importantly, Sarawak is open for collaboration,” the Premier said.

“Together, we can unlock the immense potential of a green economy, creating a truly sustainable future, and demonstrating to the world that economic progress, climate action, and environmental stewardship can, and indeed must, go hand in hand.”

“This is not just Sarawak’s carbon journey. This is our contribution to the planet and our future generations. And our message is simple: Sarawak is ready.”
