MIRI: The Smart City concept will be expanded to other major towns in Sarawak following the successful launch of its Proof of Concept (POC) here today, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg said.
The Smart City infrastructural solution includes safe city, digital signage, safe park and smart drain; whereas the software and system solution cover services such as smart bus, smart truck, smart Miri, smart tourism and Miri Cares.
In his official launch speech, the Chief Minister said he expected hubs such as Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu were to be transformed into smart cities in stages over the next few years, with the rest of Sarawak to follow by 2030.
“By this, we mean all the services in these major towns will be at the push of a button,” he said in a press conference held after the launch ceremony at a leading hotel, here.
Abang Johari said under the POC approach Miri would be a test case for the state government to determine whether the digitalisation process is effective, viable and could be understood by the people.
He said all data collected in the Miri system would be linked to and stored in the big data command Centre in Kuching, and the same would apply for other towns chosen for the Smart City concept later.
Earlier, the Minister of Transport, Datuk Lee Khim Shin and Miri Mayor Adam Yii also spoke.
Also present were the Minister of Local Government and Housing, Professor Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian and DUN Deputy Speaker, Dato Gerawat Gala.
