KUCHING: The state government will give emphasis on development of tourism industry through new approaches outlined in the 12 Malaysia Plan (12MP).
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg said, the government will work with private sector to upgrade and operate the frequently visited national parks such as Bako, Semenggoh, Mulu and Niah National Park.
“The asset belongs to the government but the Sarawak Forestry Corporations will work with private sector to operate the national park, that will give interaction between asset border which is the government and must comply with certain regulation which is enforced by Sarawak Forestry in term of conservation and preservation but the marketing and the running or the facilities will be done by the private sector,” he said at gala dinner of the 8th Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards 2017/2018 yesterday night.
Besides, emphasis will also be given to provide product development which is to be seen in the development of fully-equipped performing arts centre for art enthusiasts in the near future.
“Of course this also needs a lot of funds. But under the 12MP, we have allocated for the stage of performing arts in Kuching,” he remarks.
He added, the government will intensify the promotion worldwide to bring tourists to destinations in Sarawak through negotiations with operators of airline industry and boost health tourism industry to attract foreign visitors to have treatment in Sarawak.
With these 12MPs outlined to be implemented, Abang Zohari is confident that Sarawak’s tourism will flourish and benefit the economy as well as the tourism partners.
Abang Zohari also acknowledged the concerted effort made by the tourism industry’s partners, stakeholders and the medias in building the growing tourism industry in Sarawak.
The event last night had witnessed the presentation of 30 different awards to the finalists of the 8th Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards Ceremony 2019 in acknowledging their excellence, originality and exclusivity of services.
