KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg highlighted that Sarawak need to maintain its stability and cultural cohesion as he believes that it attracts investors.

“As far as Sarawak is concerned, we welcome investment from China; a lot of investment coming into Sarawak because they believe in Sarawak’s stability; we have to maintain our stability and our cultural cohesion.”

He said this in his speech before witnessing The Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Amalgamated Batteries Manufacturing (SARAWAK) Sdn Bhd and Jujiang Power Technology Co., LTD on Setting Up Of A Joint Venture For The Manufacturing of Enhanced Flooded Batteries For Use In Idle Start Stop, Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, today.

He added that from this partnership it will definitely develop new technology in terms of battery productions as he is concerned that batteries contained a particular component called lithium which is not friendly to the environment.

“All over the world now people are talking about environment; normally battery can stand for 5 years and then you have to change it after that; if there is a technology which can recycle used batteries then it is sustainable.” he said.

He also suggested that the two companies should build their lithium research lab in Sarawak.

“Therefore Sarawak can be a laboratory between Amalgamated Batteries Manufacturing (SARAWAK) Sdn Bhd and Jujiang Power Technology Co., LTD to do research on what to do with lithium; either recycle or how to extract lithium from the whole batteries and then that lithium can be use for a new battery.”

“I think the new technology that can extract that particular component; batteries will be sustainable and people will shift with the use of batteries” he added.

The Chief Minister then again said that a lot of city now are using hybrid cars and the usage of batteries are gradually increasing.
